Most holiday segmentation starts and ends with purchase history. Recent buyers get one email, lapsed customers get another, and cart abandoners get a reminder. Those segments work, but nearly every brand in the inbox is building the same ones, which is a big part of why holiday marketing starts to sound alike before Black Friday even arrives.
The data that would set your campaigns apart usually isn’t in your ecommerce platform at all. Purchase history tells you what someone bought. It can’t tell you whether they have kids at home, whether their birthday falls two weeks before the holidays, or who else in the household might be shopping. Filling in that context is what data enrichment does. Once a customer profile includes it, marketers can spot holiday audiences they aren’t building today, then reach them across email, SMS, and direct mail through partners like Poplar.
What Purchase History Can’t Tell You About Your Holiday Shoppers
Two customers who bought the same sweater in March can look identical in Klaviyo. One might be a single professional who shops for herself. The other might be a parent of three who will spend December buying for everyone but herself. They’ll respond to very different holiday offers, and nothing in their order history says so.
Enriched data tells them apart, and the most useful details start with the household. Are there kids, and how old are they? Is the customer married, what do they do for work, and do they own their home? Behavioral data comes next, suggesting whether a customer is a likely gift card buyer, a deal hunter who waits for the best coupon, or someone who gravitates toward premium stores. Income and life stage fill in the rest, guiding price points and how deep a discount really needs to go.
Three Holiday Segments Most Brands Aren’t Building Yet
The best use of enriched data during the holidays is finding campaigns that aren’t on the calendar yet. Each idea below starts with one piece of customer context and a clear path to a better message.
1. November and December Birthdays
Customers with holiday-season birthdays tend to get buried under seasonal promotions, and plenty of them notice. With birth month added to their profiles, brands can pull together everyone celebrating in November or December and send them something other than another sitewide sale email. Age and occupation can sharpen the outreach, so a 28-year-old nurse and a 55-year-old executive don’t get the same birthday pick. The birthday is the reason to reach out. Knowing a little more about the person is what makes the message worth opening.
2. The Other Adult in the Household
During gifting season, your best customer’s spouse or partner may be one of your most likely buyers, even if they’ve never shopped with you. Householder matching makes it possible to identify another adult in the home and reach them with a separate gifting campaign built around the brands and products your customer already loves. Direct mail has a real advantage here. A gift recommendation that arrives at the home reaches the whole household, which an email to one person’s inbox can’t do.
3. Shoppers Grouped by Spending Power
Every BFCM shopper wants value, but they don’t all define it the same way. Income and spending signals, along with a sense of whether someone leans toward bargains or premium brands, help shape offers around how a customer is likely to spend. A value-focused group might see your deepest discount on entry-level products. A higher-spending group might get early access to a premium bundle with a smaller discount, or none at all. There’s a margin argument here too. When everyone gets the same 30% off, some of that discount goes to customers who would have paid more.
Putting It to Work in Klaviyo and Poplar
For brands on Klaviyo, the practical question is how much extra work this adds. With LaunchPad’s Customer Profile Appends, enriched data lands on existing Klaviyo profiles in real time, so a November birthday segment is built the same way as any other segment. LaunchPad’s data is privacy-compliant and uses no cookies or online tracking, so brands can enrich the profiles they already have and get audiences ready while there’s still time to plan around them.
Once those audiences exist, Poplar lets brands reach the same groups through direct mail, alongside the email and SMS already planned for the season. A birthday mailer can land in the customer’s birthday month, a gift guide can go to the spouse or partner, and a premium early-access offer can reach higher spenders before the biggest Black Friday discounts go live.
The research supports pairing better data with mail. According to Lob’s State of Direct Mail: Business Insights 2026, 96% of business leaders say personalization improves direct mail results. Start With the Segments Already on Your Holiday Plan
Holiday personalization doesn’t require a new data strategy or a dozen new campaigns. It can start with the audiences you’re already planning and one honest question about each: what would we need to know about these customers to send them something better? Sometimes the answer is who they’re shopping for. Sometimes it’s how much they’re likely to spend. Once you have it, direct mail through Poplar carries that message off the screen and into the home, where it has a lot less competition for attention.
